the secrets we…. Virtual Exhibition Tour

Earlier this year my work  ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’was installed  in Lord Byron’s Dressing Room at his ancestral home, Newstead Abbey, Nottinghamshire. The work was part of the ‘Lace Unveiled’ exhibition 10 March – 22 April 2018. This is the first time ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves….’ was installed solely by The Nottingham Museums Team since the work was acquisition into Nottingham’s Textile Art Collection in 2016.

the secrets we keep from ourselves…. (tswkfo)

My work ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves….’ (2012-2015) is currently part the ‘Lace Unveiled’ exhibition at Newstead Abbey 10 March – 22 April 2018.

Lace Unveiled includes work by contemporary artists inspired by lace displayed within the rooms of Newstead Abbey, the ancestral home of the Romantic Poet Lord Byron. Which are on shown alongside objects from the world-class Nottingham City Museums & Galleries Lace Collection. This is the first time ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves….’ will be installed solely byThe Nottingham Museums Team since the work was acquisition into Nottingham’s Textile Art Collection in 2016. I am very excited to see if my 218 page document of Installation Guidelines has worked ! ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’ is installed in Byron’s Dressing Room, which is next to his bedroom. Other Artists included in the Exhibition are Joana Vasconcelos, Joy Buttress, Manolis Papastavrou and Shane Waltener.

Lace Unveiled is part of Nottingham Museums’ Lace Unravelled public programme, which includes a symposium, which I am going to this week (15^th and 16^th March) and Lace Walks. Please follow link for further details.

The final handover of ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’ 2012-2015

I am really so pleased to announce that ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’ (tswkfo) is now all safely in the store of Nottingham City Museums Art Textile Collection. This is to be the works’ new home. It has taken me a while to stabilize and prepare the work ready for its departure and to complete a 200 plus page document of installment guidelines and image library to support future installs of the work.

‘the secrets we keep from ourselves’ joins The Brides Clothes, The Brides Clothes Underwear, The Brides Clothes Wedding Album (2000-01), Squeeze (1999), Petti-fur-coat (1999) and Odd one out (2000), all part of Nottingham City Museums Contemporary Art Textile Collection.

My thanks to the team at Nottingham Museums for all their continued support, patience and assistance getting the tswkfo to it new home.

Still at it!

In-between other works, projects and proposal writing I am still collating and typing up instalment guidelines for ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’ When these guidelines are complete ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’ will be handed over to Nottingham’s galleries and museums art and heritage collections. (Can’t wait for this to happen as this guideline writing for this particular installation seems endless!)

Thank you to everyone of came along to my afternoon studio viewing of ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves’, despite the wet and windy weather.

The work received lots of insightful and positive feedback which had been good to hear after a year of working on her stabilization which has been a very slow process.

The installation can still be viewed by appointment until Wednesday 25^th November, de-installation starts on Thursday 26^th November…. Please do get in contact if you would like to view the secrets we keep from ourselves’ before then.

All Welcome – you are advised to wrap up warm!

Nearest train station; Preston Park – Brighton bus routes; 5 and 5A – On-Street pay and display parking in Robertson Road and surrounding area 1 hour £1 and 2 hours £2.

Please note; Robertson Yard is a private studio complex and not normally open for public visits – there is NO step free access at Robertson Yard. If you require step free access please contact Lucy to discuss your requirements. If you are unable to attend on the 7th then the work can also be viewed by appointment. Please do get in touch if you would like to arrange an individual viewing.

‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’ was originally commissioned by Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery for ‘Lace Works; Contemporary Art & Nottingham Lace’ Exhibition 2012/13. Over the last year Lucy has been stabilizing the work and completing instalment guidelines ready for ‘the secrets we keep from ourselves…’ to be handed over to ‘her’ new, permanent home; Nottingham’s’ Contemporary Art Textile Collection.

nylon thread replacement is….

what i want to move away from (is you) is relying on the nylon thread to pull up seams, necklines, shoulder edges, waist bands, bust bows, hem frills…can warp lace trims and fake seam (bodily) extensions be used instead of nylon thread…

An additional frill

Pink frilly hem – “two seams” ; woven in top area – (blue slip) lop-sided lowest side near Blue petticoat . . . can strap of Blue petticoat be held up by pink frilly hem I wonder…

Seamed warp lace trim

Stripped down bodily side seams, running stitched into lace trim warp to hold (in place) the white machine-made lace layer of the St Michaels negligée….
